One of the truly interesting parts of Cape Town are the Townships. A legacy of the racist Apartheid system and intriguing suburbs now full of growth, with incredible stories attached to them. Take a township tour to Khayelitsha on the Cape Flats. See the world from Look-Out Hill, buy crafts and eat at an African restaurant. Tourism is a major drawcard to the townships, and gives visitors some insight into the lives of those who live here. The start of the township tour is usually around 8h15 or 8h30. You can do a half day township tour for the price of R280 or a full day township tour for the price of R490.

Approximately an hour and a half away from Cape Town is the seaside town of Hermanus. A popular holiday destination for tourists and locals alike, Hermanus is hailed as offering the best land based whale watching in the world. From May onwards Southern Right Whales pay homage to these warm, shallow waters in order to calf their young and to mate. The best time for whale watching is between August and November and at this time the bay is dotted with whales. More often than not, they're more than happy to put on a performance.

The Castle of Good Hope is a massive pentagonal fortress and the oldest occupied buiding in South Africa. Its construction began as early as 1666. Based in the heart of Cape Town and easily accessible by taxi it is a must see. Today it houses a fascinating collection of art works and military artifacts. Guided tours will introduce you to the dungeons, the dolphin pool and the blacksmith. The Castle is open daily from 9am to 4pm. The Key Ceremony takes place on weekdays at 10 am and the Change of Guards at 12 o'clock. It costs a very reasonable R20 and will take an hour or two to get around.

Rhodes Memorial, an impressively classical-style 'temple' set some distance up Devil's Peak. The memorial incorporates GF Watts fine statue, 'Physical Energy', and a large bust of Rhodes beneath which is inscribed part of Kipling's moving tribute to the man who shaped the subcontinent during the later part of the 19th Century. There is a pleasant walk to the memorial from which there are fine views over the suburbs. There is also a delightful little cafe behind the memorial for a light lunch or their scrumptous tea and scones.
